Paul clearly wrote 1 Timothy not only to counteract false teachings but also to encourage Timothy to stand for and proclaim the truth. The apostle gives numerous instructions and advisories concerning various problems that either had or probably would arise in the church. In 1 Timothy we find practical guidance on how to direct the affairs of the church in such a way that it would grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.
